About Safescapes
Based in Hamilton, Ontario, Safescapes is a family-run surfacing company led by brothers Matthew and Paul. Specializing in rubber safety surfacing for spaces like playgrounds, pool decks, splash pads and large public spaces, the team takes on projects ranging from small residential driveways to multi-million-dollar commercial developments – including a landmark Toronto waterfront project, Biidaasige Park.
With over 15 years’ experience in the industry, Safescapes has earned a reputation across Ontario for delivering complex, irregular designs with quality, efficiency, and care.
The Challenge
Measuring Irregular Shapes – Every Single Day
Since starting out 15 years ago, Matt and his team have cycled through different measuring methods, beginning with stepping it off, and gradually trying out different tools:
“We did the tape measure, we did the wheel, and here a lot of quoting is done in the spring when typically it's still really cold out. So you're there with cold hands, trying to write everything down.”
Safescapes’ work is defined by curves, inlays, and freeform shapes. For Matt, translating that complexity into reliable numbers meant stitching together measurements for rectangles and arcs, with a pen and paper. While this method worked, the process was laborious, and left little to no documentation for the project:
“You'd have to do a rectangle here, square there, half a circle there, add them all up, get your square footage, and then you have no reference document besides your own chicken scratch on your paper to show the customer.”

In his industry, complex shapes aren’t the exception, but the rule. On a daily basis, Matt and his coworkers are dealing with irregular, unusual spaces that require accurate measurements:
“98% of everything is irregular. We'll do random shapes and designs, and for example I’ll need to calculate the surface area of an irregular crocodile shape that I'm doing as an inlay for a project, at the same time as everything else.”
It wasn’t until a social media post introduced Moasure to Paul in 2020, showing a new way to simplify complicated measurements. Intrigued by the motion-based measuring technology, they decided to give Moasure a try:
“It was a social media post that my brother saw, and he said, let's try that when [Moasure] was first coming out.”

“We did the tape measure, we did the wheel, and here a lot of quoting is done in the spring when typically it's still really cold out. So you're there with cold hands, trying to write everything down.”

The Solution
An Evolution in Measuring and Productivity
Since first adopting Moasure five years ago, both the tool and Safescapes have evolved – and even now, Moasure catches people’s attention:
“It's just been an evolution from tape measure, wheel, and then the Moasure – and everybody comments about it.”
Being able to calculate the surface area of a complex shape, quickly and accurately, is essential to every single rubber surfacing job. Moasure’s patented measuring technology allows Matt to capture key details like perimeter, area, grade changes, volumes and more, in the time it takes for him to walk around the site – all without GPS, internet, or a second pair of hands.
Once Matt had practiced with his Moasure device and app the first few times, he felt confident to start capturing data on the job:
Moasure’s built-in file storage capabilities meant that Matt could immediately improve the way he documents and stores measurements from each site, advancing from scribbled pen-and-paper drawings to professional, dimensioned on-screen diagrams.

Confidence in Measurements
Not only does Moasure help the way Matt and the Safescapes team present site data, but it also adds an extra layer of transparency with the customer too.
Moasure’s accuracy ensures that Matt feels confident in what he’s quoting to prospective customers, helping to build a trusting relationship – especially for premium projects:
“I can kind of eyeball certain things, but when you get into the more expensive customers which are the ones that you want, and you want to feel confident with your ability, having the Moasure there to illustrate that from the get-go, that: ‘Okay, they're not misleading me adding a couple hundred square feet.’”
For Matt, having more accurate measurements with Moasure removes the element of guesswork, improves material ordering, and shows his clients that he’s not misquoting them – which in turn, strengthens his competitive edge over other companies who may be bidding for the same job.

Mastering Material Requirements
As well as supporting Safescapes in their estimates and quoting process, Moasure is a vital tool when it comes to calculating material requirements during a live project:
“Different surfaces need different material, at different rates. So, we need to make sure our guys are within certain bounds, or we'll run out in the last little bit. With Moasure, it's good that you can do a quick runaround in the irregular shapes, check and be like, ‘We're good’, or ‘Somebody run back and get more material. We're gonna run out, this job’s eating up more material than anticipated…’”
A faster, more accurate, and straightforward measuring processes means that Matt and his team can make decisions quickly on-site, as many times as they need.
Project Highlight: Biidaasige Park, Toronto
In 2025, the Safescapes team completed one of their largest ever projects using Moasure. Once an industrial stretch along Toronto’s waterfront, Biidaasige Park has been reimagined into a connected, 50-acre green space – a project so huge it made the national news.

With plans dating back as far as 2013 and coordination involving many moving parts, it wasn’t until the end of 2020 that the task of surfacing new playground spaces landed on Safescapes’ radar. Matt and his team were enthusiastic at the prospect of working on such an immense project:
“The project itself was big, exciting, and a lot of fun to do…but definitely having the confidence from using Moasure for the measurements and working with the architect’s designs helped out.”
The plans for the playground design were complex – multiple different shapes, sizes, and several different breaks in color from a continuous pour meant that this job was going to be far from simple:
“We did it in one continual pour for each section, which is very hard when there was about 19 different breaks in the color, that had to be perfect on a shape. Doing it wet, to wet, to wet, to wet is something that only the pros in the rubber safety surfacing industry would really appreciate.”
Because of the intricacies of the playground designs, and the requirement for multiple different colors and shades, ordering the right amount of each material was crucial. Matt says:
“The thing that could have bit us so hard, was if we got our quantities wrong. It would be about $60,000 of material to know that I will not under-order my materials, but then I'm also out $60,000 in these random colors that aren't often asked for, and then I'm just sitting on lost profits and material that will sit for the next four years...So having the Moasure to be able to double check, definitely good for that.”
Using Moasure, Safescapes adhered to the architect’s designs correctly – and in the process, measured several complicated shapes accurately, minimized the amount of material wastage they had, and checked on-site measurements quickly – resulting in playground surfaces that combine style, safety, and functionality.

“The thing that could have bit us so hard, was if we got our quantities wrong. It would be about $60,000 of material... So having the Moasure to be able to double check, definitely good for that.”
The Result
Optimized Materials, Time, and Confidence
As a small business, time is money. As such, Moasure has helped the Safescapes team become faster and more efficient in their workflow over the past five years:
“As far as the measuring process [is concerned], it’s been at least two to three times faster.”
With less time spent measuring, but with even more information and data, Matt and his colleagues can spend more time building relationships with their customers and providing the best customer service possible. Day to day, the team moves through quotes and checks more efficiently – and with fewer mistakes. Plus, customers put more faith in the Safescapes team to quote a job quickly, even when they’re not at the property:
“I have more time to be at the customer's house, doing the face-to-face selling, building the relationship, understanding the customer's wants and needs. Then jump to the next place to quote. Then it's just like in and out, in and out.”
For newer businesses in particular, Matt adds that the credibility of accurate, shareable measurements strengthens pricing, and reduces second‑guessing. Moasure’s exporting functionality gives Matt the option to share diagrams directly from the Moasure app as CAD, PDF, CSV files and more – streamlining the entire quoting process:
“It's a very good tool to be able to give confidence in your quoting, especially for people that are starting out, coming from somebody that started out with no money, no loans.”

Boosted Bottom Line and Reduced Wastage
By increasing quoting accuracy and cutting down on over-ordering materials, Moasure has helped Safescapes save more than $100,000 in avoided waste and rework. On high-value projects, it’s also proven to be a key safeguard against plan discrepancies, before they turn into costly errors:
“Moasure has been instrumental on very large projects when the stakes are very high. Very good and double checking other people's work also…if I was to add up our savings from the beginning of time, at least $100,000.”
Compared to using more traditional measuring tools, Moasure has prevented Matt from having to add an inflated buffer when he orders materials, just to be on the safe side. Now with multiple Moasure ONE and Moasure 2 PRO devices across the team, Moasure is truly integrated into Safescapes’ daily workflow:
“The investment in Moasure will save you time, and you'll realize as your business grows, and your time becomes more strained, that time is the most valuable thing. But money is as well.”
